Job Satisfaction: Need of the hour

Research reveals that nearly 80% of the Indian employee is not satisfied with his/her job due to various factors ranging from good pay to good work-life balance. Traditionally capital and technology provide an edge over competitors but now humans are doing this job, ‘Business is people’ concept changes HR policy of Hiring-developing-exploiting-firing to Hiring-developing-training-retaining.

Despite its wide usage in scientific research, as well as in everyday life, there is still no general agreement regarding what job satisfaction is. Different authors have different approaches towards defining job satisfaction. Hoppock look job satisfaction as any combination of psychological, physiological and environmental circumstances, Vroom in his definition on job satisfaction focuses on the role of the employee in the workplace.

Job satisfaction has to do with the way how people feel about their job and its various aspects. It has to do with the extent to which people like or dislike their job. That why job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction can appear in any given work situation.

Why Job Satisfaction?

  • Lower Turnover.
  • Higher Productivity.
  • Increased Customer Satisfaction.
  • Employee Absenteeism.
  • Helps to Earn Higher Revenues.
  • Satisfied Employees Tend to Handle Pressure

Factors of Dissatisfaction

  • Job security
  • Poor work culture

Companies like Google, Infosys, Wipro, American Express, Hindustan Unilever are now focussing on their employees and providing them a better work-life.

For instance, Google is investing a huge amount on employee growth and building the employer brand by changing the way of working like-

  • Nurturing creativity and training
  • Informalisation
  • Time for personal work, For example, Employee can give one hour to his personal work
  • Facilities at workplace like free food, playing zone, no office culture, creche, etc
  • Employee benefit scheme like paid maternity leave, employee stock option, etc

Job Satisfaction is no doubt is beneficial for both employee and employer but satisfying human needs is a very tedious task in the changing environment and demanding employee. Big organizations can afford to work in the direction of satisfaction but small and medium organizations are still lacking because it is costly and time-consuming. To improve satisfaction among employees an organization can do many things like-

  • Fair compensation policy
  • Reducing bossism
  • Better work and life balance
  • Recognition
  • Superior-subordinate relation
  • Acknowledge their suggestions
  • Training and development

Today there is a shortage of talent in the market and everyone is competing on human resources to gain an edge, Head Hunting is common today. Now talented and dedicated humans are scarce resources so to win over the completion you have the best human resources. Job dissatisfaction mainly found in the case of a middle and low class of companies, I think the employers of these classes should take steps to reduce the labour turnover and make them satisfied. Also, one should conduct awareness programmes to grab the attention of the employer towards employees dissatisfaction.
Thank you divyanshu for writing this blog.

Phenomenal articulation !!!

In particular if we talk about IT sector, we can say it is because of the odd timings of the call we have to attend so that people in East zone are comfortable in attending those too. Long working hours (overtime) , arrogant & dictator bosses create a very bad environment because of which employee starts thinking that he is underpaid for so much stress to handle & baised work environment is very common in India which is followed by lack of recognition leading to bad relationship and hence lack of growth opportunities. Majority fall in this category.

But above all different people have different priorities & not a single scale is good enough to satisfy a employee..

In my opinion there should be an effort towards maintaining the physical as well as mental hard working criteria.. further more like in IT SECTORS an employee can work from home but in field work there is alot to move & there should be a fine understanding of acknowledgment..and preparing of state of mind.. the job satisfaction and value for hard work should be increase !

All the points that you had mention above were real as per current working scenario.I would also like to add certain points to it. As a person everyone would like to associate and work for big names and brand in respective industry and they want to get there at any cost ,even at the cost of there work life balance.Just in name of Big Brand and higher pay people sacrifice there day to day life. Its also employee responsibility to ask for work life at the time for selecting comapnies to work for.

In India the criteria for the selection of the employee is basically degree oriented irrespective of talent oriented ….Those who want job experience at the youngest age in order to implement their future plan this connotation is not helpfull to reach their expectations to a satisfactory level
