Open Defecation Free India….??
This 2 October 2019 has great significance as it marks the 150th birth anniversary of our beloved Mahatma Gandhi and the deadline of swachh Bharat Mission. On 2 October 2014 GOI launched swachh Bharat mission to make India clean and Open defecation free it in five years.
Open defecation is the human practice of defecating outside (in the open environment) rather than into toilets. This problem was a menace for the people both in the rural and urban area particularly the condition of rural India is pathetic. The maximum population (before SB mission) has not toilets, even those having it go outside and defecate in open. It was in their habit they were not aware of the harm. The urban area was also not short in their contribution but it basically remains with urban poor and people without homes. At the time Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched, India had 450 million people defecating in the open, which according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) accounted for 59 percent of the 1.1 billion people in the world practicing open defecation.
Government Push
Swacch Bharat Mission was a very applauded and well ambitious program of the NDA 1.0. It is directed towards the behavioral change of population towards cleanliness drive and prime minister always focussed on “Jan Bhagidari” ( people’s participation). The main aim is to change the behavior of people of littering around, defecating in open. keeping surrounding clean, use dustbin and bring cleanliness in the habit. Under this mission government constructed record number toilets both in the rural and urban areas. The municipal corporation distributed dustbins for dry and wet wastes collected at the doorstep. As per the government report, it constructed a record number of toilets ( Rural-1007.98 lakh, urban 5846107 (individual) 499006 (public) ).
Shift in Behaviour
Complete Jan bhagidari is seen with people’s participation making mission a success. According to the World Health Organization, open-defecation was reduced by 12 percentage points since 2014 which was nearly four times of what was achieved between 2004 and 2014. Most of rural India had already become ODF by February of this year. Over 93 percent of households in villages had toilets.
Problems Ahead…
There is a new challenge in front as the toilets are not constructed scientifically and the waste treatment is not there, septic tanks have the possibility of leakages and overflow causing water and soil pollution. The government has no plan to treat waste.
The most important is really India is open defecation free today, For me, it is certainly not I notice it daily when I go for a morning walk. People having toilets also not using it. Those without homes in urban areas living in open spaces or illegally where they defecate?????. Certainly they are defecating open and in rural areas, people have still the habit of carrying lota (vessel) in the morning.
What next…
Peoples can’t be forced to change their behavior and if forced the result is not desirable, use the carrot and stick approach. Making them realize the aftereffect on themself will work. A complete transformation of behavior is required. The government plan to have a house for all by 2022 under PMAY will be good for the urban poor. Septic waste management should be sound and try to cover all. Those who left unofficially should be covered, working on paper is easy but ground coverage is necessary for the effectiveness of the mission.
Our partcipation is must, we as a responsible citizen should promote cleanliness and motivate others to do so. Every hand must contribute. We all are brandambessdor.
Keep your surrounding clean
‘HAR HATH SWACHHTA KI OAR’
The government of India should take care about waste material and better sewage system,..as we can see in most of the areas flood has been become the major problem for normal people juss because the drainage system is not updated..
Waste management is the key for sure in success.
Great work🤘
Thank You
Educating adults and school children about “why they should not defecate in the open” will help reduce open defecation. This has been lacking. Hygiene and sanitation education should be mandated in every school and at every class level
True for sure…bringing it in DNA
On 100th birth anniversary of Mahatma gandhi Government regulated single use of plastic bag which is commendable but at the same place use of paper bag is also dangerous for environment the more use of paper bag leads to more cut of paper tree so I suggest fabric bag is best for use
On the 100th birth anniversary of bapuu our government started single use of plastic and initiated paper bag but paper bag is also dangerous for environment bcj more use of plastic bag leads to more cut of paper tree
Yes we need economical and ecological solution for it.
Great job #man 👍&keep it up.
Thank You so much
Yess things are far from reality but may be 1 day we will achieve it.
The attitude of mass is changing and one day we achieve it.
Thank you, Raj
